Scott Leads Attack, as Bryan Wins Sixth Straight

DAYTON, Tenn. – The cold temperatures had no effect on the 14th-ranked Bryan College baseball team Tuesday night when the Lions run-ruled NCCAA opponent Toccoa Falls College (Ga.) 14-3 in seven innings, marking the sixth straight victory for Bryan. The Lions lifted their overall record to 15-4 while dropping the Screaming Eagles to 6-10.

Helping outhit Toccoa Falls was Bryan's Tyler Scott (JR/Calgary, Alberta) who had a standout performance with a perfect 4-of-4 display at the plate with a team-high five RBIs in addition to one run scored, one double, one homerun, and a stolen base. The junior from Calgary, Alberta native was trailed by Wade Weinburger (JR/James Cistern, Bahamas) in the hits' column with two connections, two runs scored, two RBIs, and a lone steal. Marcus Catalano (JR/Tuscon, Ariz.) also took his turn going deep on his one hit, marking Bryan's second homerun on the day. Gabe Howell (FR/Summerville, Ga.) earned a pair of runs batted in, and he led the team with three runs scored. He was walked three times and doubled on his one hit. Lake Burris (SR/Chatsworth, Ga.) notched an RBI double for his one hit, and Logan Peterson (JR/Chickamauga, Ga.) also chipped in a double on his only hit. As a team, the Lions outhit the Screaming Eagles 10-7, were an even 3-3 in errors, and out-stole the visitors 5-1.

The collection of Luke Henderson (SR/Auburn, Ga.), Reece Roach (JR/Summerville, Ga.), Tristan Allison (FR/Baxter, Tenn.), AJ Rolle (SR/Freeport, Bahamas), Jesus Astudillo (SR/Caracas, Venezuela), Samuel Salyers (SR/Kingsport, Tenn.), and Kurt Meeberg (SR/Edmonton, Alberta) all participated on the mound for one inning apiece. All but Salyers gave up one hit while Rolle surrendered two. The first run came against Roach, the next was during Rolle's stint, and an unearned run was yielded with Meeberg tossing. Rolle collected all three outs via strikeout for a team-high K's. Astudillo was awarded the win and trailed Rolle with two strikeouts, marking his first win on the year, as the senior from Caracas, Venezuela moved his record to 1-1.

Weinburger worked his way around the bases for the score of the game during the bottom of the first frame. He reached on a fielder's choice, swiped second, and then used his speed to reach third on Burris' groundout before sprinting home on the throw to claim a 1-0 lead for the Lions.

Toccoa Falls responded in the second with a single, error, wild pitch, and a sacrifice fly to even the count 1-1. Peterson helped Bryan counter in the bottom of the inning with a leadoff double ripped to left. Destine Udombon (FR/Carrollton, Ga.) took over running duties and took scoring position at third on Scott's single to left. Udombon successfully stole home to regain the lead for Bryan 2-1.
The Screaming Eagles singled, and Burris sailed a double to deep right-center in the third stanza, but neither team was able to capitalize. Toccoa Falls tied things up with a single in the top of the fourth and applied pressure with bases loaded, but a strikeout and groundout eliminated the threat. The game-changing moment for Bryan occurred in the bottom of the fourth, beginning with Peterson reaching on a walk and Scott taking the second pitch thrown his direction and powering it over the left-field fence for his second homerun of the season. The Screaming Eagles may have thought the next two outs coming quickly would keep the Lions from dealing any more damage, but Catalano had other plans when he smoked a towering solo shot to deep right-center, growing his homerun count to four on the year. The four-spot was completed when Howell was walked, stole second, and then came home on Weinburger's single through the hole at second base for a commanding 6-2 lead.

The Lions continued pouring in runs when Scott drove in Burris with an RBI single through the hole at short in the fifth and Howell doubled to left-center scoring Tucker Cain (SR/Lebanon, Tenn.) and Catalano in the sixth before Howell eventually scored on an error committed by the Screaming Eagles to take over the game 10-2.

An error by Bryan resulted in Toccoa Falls' final run of the game being scored in the top of the seventh. In the bottom of the inning, the Lions wrapped up the contest when Weinburger brought in Cain on an RBI single, a misplayed grounder scored Howell, and Scott delivered a game-ending two-run double to left for the 14-3 decision.
