#2 BASEBALL WINS BATTLE AGAINST MARTIN METHODIST

Recap, photo courtesy of TWU
Pulaski, Tenn.- The second-ranked baseball team went on the road for the seventh straight time on Wednesday. The team hopped out of Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) play to take on the Redhawks of Martin Methodist College, in a game which ended up being a slugfest.

Dan Fry led off the first inning for the Bulldogs, making his way to base via a hit by pitch to give TWU a scoring opportunity. A groundout and stolen base got Fry to third base, giving the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead when he scored on Alex Flock's groundout. Tennessee Wesleyan tacked on a few more runs in the second inning.

Shamoy Christopher led off the inning with a walk, and was replaced with pinch-runner Malik Stephens. The pinch-runner was not on base for long when Braden Mosley came to the plate and took the first pitch he saw yard to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 advantage. It was looking like that was all the damage which would be done as the next two batters struck out but Jhosmel Rodriquez extended the inning with his single. Rodriquez made it all the way to home plate from first off the Fry's triple, giving TWU a four-run advantage after their half of the second inning. The bottom half of the second inning saw Martin Methodist scored six runs to move ahead 6-4.

The lead changed back to Tennessee Wesleyan's favor in the third inning. A single by Aloysius Cruz followed by a double from Christopher put both runners in scoring position. Like he did in the second inning, Mosley cleared the bases with his second home run of the game, giving the Bulldogs a 7-6 lead. A double by Chase Fullington kept the scoring chances alive as Max Draijer came to the plate. Draijer made the most of his plate appearance, hitting a single up the middle to score the final run of the inning in Fullington.

In his next opportunity at the plate in the fifth inning, Draijer put another run on the board when he sent a ball over the left field wall to make the score 9-6. Rodriquez, who was pinch-ran for with Corey Wynant, and Fry put runners on base with their singles. The bases became loaded when Reichenborn used patience at the plate to earn a walk and unloaded when Flock hit a sacrifice fly to score Wynant, advancing Fry to third. Sequential stolen bases by Reichenborn and Fry put the 11th run of the game up for TWU with Fry scoring, giving the Bulldogs a five-run advantage. By the end of the fifth inning though, it was only a three-run lead for Tennessee Wesleyan as the Redhawks scored two runs in the bottom half.

A scoreless sixth inning led way to a seventh-inning which featured three runs. Only one run went for the Bulldogs, coming off a bomb over the left field wall by Reichenborn. The other two runs added to the score of Martin Methodist, giving TWU only a two-run advantage to kick off the eighth inning.

The lead moved back out to three in the eighth inning. Draijer set the change in motion with a hit by pitch, advancing to second on a Wynant-caused error. With the bases loaded after Fry's single, a hit by pitch on Cruz forced Draijer to trot to home plate, giving the team an insurance run. Steady pitching and the defense kept the Redhawks off the board for the remainder of the game, giving the Bulldogs a 13-10 win in the slugfest.

Mosley, Draijer, and Fry all had three hits in the game. Two of Mosley's hits were home runs resulting in five RBIs. Flock and Draijer each had two RBIs while Fry, Reichenborn, and Cruz contributed one RBI each. Juan Mateo got the win on the mound while Irving Martin came in for the save. Gavin Roberson provided five strikeouts in relief.

Tennessee Wesleyan (20-4, 3-2 AAC) hops back into conference play in their top 15 matchup against #14 Bryan College. The rivals will begin a three-game series on Friday with a single-game, beginning at 5:00 PM in Dayton, Tenn.

RedHawks Take Two, Win Series Versus Eagles

Recap, photo courtesy of Martin Methodist
PULASKI, Tenn. – The Martin Methodist Softball team swept both games of Monday's doubleheader versus No. 19 Faulkner (Ala.) to take 3-of-4 ballgames in its first SSAC series of the season.

In the opener, Martin Methodist connected on back-to-back hits in the bottom of the seventh to claim a walkoff 4-3 victory versus Faulkner.

In the nightcap, the RedHawks (8-7, 3-1 SSAC) cranked out three runs in the bottom of the fifth to claim a 10-2, run-rule victory versus the Eagles (5-7, 1-3 SSAC).

The RedHawks return to action on Wednesday, March 13, when they host Bryan (Tenn.). First pitch in Wednesday's doubleheader is set for 3 p.m. at Royce Hughes Field.

GAME ONE:
Martin Methodist 4, No. 19 Faulkner 3:

In Monday's first contest, the RedHawks saved their best for last as they notched back-to-back hits in the bottom of the seventh to produce a walkoff victory versus the No. 19 nationally-ranked Eagles.
Tied at 3-3, Sabrina Gilliam led the inning off with a double to deep left-center to give the RedHawk an immediate scoring threat. The threat turned into a run quickly as Hannah Ward sent a 1-0 pitch over the outstretched glove of the Faulkner second baseman to allow Gilliam to wheel around third and score the game-winning run.

The duo of Gilliam and Ward accounted for two hits each, which amounted to four of the team's six hits in the ballgame.

After a big day on Sunday, Gilliam was sensational yet again in Monday's opener, launching a two-run home run in the bottom of the second to go along with the double in the seventh.

Ward, meanwhile, produced two singles, but none bigger than the walkoff hit in the seventh. Taylor Mitchell accounted for the other RedHawk RBI with a single in the bottom of the fourth.

Kaylee Davis (5-3) picked up her second win in as many tries versus the Eagles in the series. The sophomore
 GAME TWO:
Martin Methodist 10, Faulkner 2:

In the nightcap, the RedHawks utilized five runs in the bottom of the third, added two in the fourth, and tacked on three in the fifth to claim the run-rule victory versus the Eagles.

Sabrina Gilliam continued her torrid pace to the start of conference play as she went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. The junior finished the Sunday-Monday series 8-of-14 with five of the eight hits going for extra bases. Gilliam smacked a home run in 3-of-4 ballgames in the conference series and drove in eight RBIs.

After she reached via error in her first at-bat, Taylor Ferguson drove in three RBIs in the victory, all via singles as part of a 3-for-4 effort at the plate.

Shelby Clifton (1-for-3) also drove in two runs via a double in the bottom of the third.

In all, the RedHawks cranked out a season-high 14 hits – their most in a game since they stroked 15 versus William Carey (Miss.) last April.

After allowing five hits and two runs in the first two innings, RedHawk starter Victoria Haughness (2-4) allowed neither over the next three as she picked up her second victory as a RedHawk.

March 10th Recap

PULASKI, Tenn. -- The Martin Methodist Softball team claimed the opener, but dropped the second contest as it split with No. 19 Faulkner (Ala.) Sunday afternoon at Royce Hughes Field.

After Mother Nature had forced a pair of postponements, the RedHawks (6-7, 1-1) finally made their long-awaited home debut in front of a capacity crowd at the East Campus.

The RedHawks capitalized on a late home run to take the opener, 3-1, but suffered a hard-fought 6-4 loss in the nightcap.

GAME ONE:
Martin Methodist 3, No. 19 Faulkner 1:
In their first conference matchup of the season, the RedHawks and Eagles played a contest that lasted just a tidy 88 minutes. The RedHawks took the opener thanks to the longball as Sabrina Gilliam blasted a three-run bomb in the bottom of the fifth.

Kaylee Davis scattered six hits across seven innings of work, allowing just a solo home run in the top of the seventh. The home run marked the lone extra-base hit of the afternoon surrendered by the sophomore, who notched her fourth win (4-3) of the season.

Six different RedHawks notched hits in the victory, with Gilliam's blast serving as the lone extra-base hit. Taylor Ferguson, Shelby Clifton, Hannah Hayes, Ombreyah and Taylor Mitchell all accounted for singles.

In addition to her single at the plate, Ferguson kept the RedHawks alive defensively as they made a diving catch in right field in the bottom of the sixth that left the bases loaded for the Eagles.

Returning All-American Caitlin Perry suffered just her second loss (4-2) of the season and Gilliam's home run was the first surrendered by the senior this season.
 GAME TWO:
No. 19 Faulkner 6, Martin Methodist 4:

Sunday's second contest saw the RedHawks strike for a run in the bottom of the first, but surrendered four runs in the top of the second and they were never able to recover.

Sabrina Gilliam started the scoring in the bottom of the first with her blast over the center field wall – her second home run of the day.

But in the second, the Eagles capitalized on two RedHawk errors to produce four runs – all unearned and take the 4-1 lead. The Eagles added two, what proved to be, insurance runs in the top of the third.
Trailing 6-1, the RedHawks began to get the bats rolling again as they accounted for two runs in the bottom of the fourth. After a pair of hits put runners aboard, the RedHawks saw Hannah Ward drive in two runs with a two-out single to center that plated Reagan Hannah and Ombreyah Daly. The Eagles then returned to Game 1 starter Caitlin Perry, who forced a groundout to end the inning.

The RedHawks made one final push in the seventh, sending four potential game-winning batters to the plate. Hannah Hayes led the frame off with a double and quickly moved to third on an ensuing single from Breanna Owens. Hayes came around to score on Hannah's single to shallow left field and pushed the potential tying run to second. Ashton Edwards came in to pinch hit and lifted a ball to left field, but did not drive deep enough to clear the bases. After Taylor Mitchell struck out, the RedHawks saw first-inning hero Sabrina Gilliam single to load the bases. Hannah Ward connected on a ball down the first base line, but was tagged out to end the contest.

Owens finished the ballgame 3-for-4 with three singles, while Ward's two singles drove in two of the RedHawks four RBIs.

Caitlin Perry (5-2) picked up the win after she relieved starter Bailey Whitfield, who lasted just 3.2 innings.

Victoria Haugness (1-4) suffered the loss in the circle for the RedHawks, lasting just 2.1 innings before giving way to Hannah Hayes, who allowed just two hits and no runs in her 4.2 innings of work.

SOFTBALL MOVES WINNING STREAK TO 11 GAMES WITH SWEEP OF (RV) BRENAU

Recap, photo courtesy of TWU
Athens, Tenn.- The softball team entered Tuesday riding a nine-game winning streak. The team looked to move their streak to 11 games at the conclusion of their doubleheader against the (RV) Brenau University Golden Tigers. The two teams came in with unblemished Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) records.

Game 1:

Tennessee Wesleyan took an early three-run lead in the first inning. Olivia Housewright led the inning with a walk before moving to second on Mackenzie Jackson's bunt-single. A Baylee Sutton single to right put the first run up when Housewright made it home. An Allee West single up the middle scored both Jackson and Sutton to make the score 3-0. Malyssa Jeter's double in the second inning was converted into a run as she got on third by Shea Lipe's sacrifice bunt and scored on a wild pitch, giving the Lady Bulldogs a 4-0 advantage.

Courtney Calkins kept the Brenau batters in check as TWU made another move in the sixth inning. The inning looked like it was going to be over quick with the first two batters recording two quick outs. Housewright changed the outlook with her single through the hole at short. Jackson kept the inning going with her single and Sutton did the damage, hitting a blast to deep center field to bring in both base runners. Courtney Black followed at the plate and dropped a single into right field to score Sutton, helping Calkins and the Lady Bulldogs get the shutout win 7-0.

Sutton finished the game 2-3 with two runs and three RBIs while West went 2-4 from the plate with two RBIs. Calkins allowed just three hits in the complete game shutout.

Game 2:

Even though Tennessee Wesleyan got two hits in the first inning, a run did not cross until the second inning. It came when Sivan Palacios got on base with a single and moved into scoring position on West's sacrifice bunt. A single to right by Jeter scored the only run of the inning when Palacios crossed home plate.

After the Golden Tigers tied it in the third inning, a downpour of runs came in the bottom half of the same inning. After an out by the first batter, Sutton and Black hit back-to-back singles to put two runners on. A fielder's choice on Palacios' hit scored Sutton as she beat the throw to the plate. A double to left center by West left her alone on third as Black and Palacios both scored, making the score 4-0.

The onslaught continued with Briana Muller's walk putting runners on first and second before West scored on Jeter's single. Muller moved to third on the single and scored on a wild pitch. The hits kept piling on as Housewright singled to right, moving Jeter to third. A passed ball gave Jeter the space to score and put Housewright in scoring position on second. The batting order returned to the top of the lineup and saw Jackson bring in a run with her single to left when Housewright tapped home plate with her foot, giving the Lady Bulldogs an 8-0 advantage. Sutton reached base for the second time in the inning, only standing on first momentarily as Black sent a ball to center field, scoring both Jackson and Sutton. The two runs gave TWU nine runs in the inning and brought the mercy rule into effect with the team leading 10-1.

Cheyenne Strong and the defense behind her got the team to the five-inning mercy rule, not giving up a hit in the process of the team's 10-1, five-inning win.

Housewright, Jackson, Black, and Jeter each finished 2-3 from the dish while Black, West, and Jeter had two RBIs each. Strong made multiple batters swing and miss to the tune of nine strikeouts in the no-hitter for the Lady Bulldogs.

Tennessee Wesleyan (11-1, 8-0 AAC)  go on the road for their next action on the diamond. The team makes the short trip up the road to Madisonville, Tenn., on Friday to take on Hiwassee College at 1:00 PM.

#2 BASEBALL DROPS DOUBLEHEADER TO UNION COLLEGE

Recap, photo courtesy of TWU
Barbourville, Ky.- The baseball team, ranked #2 in the NAIA, jumped back into Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) with a road trip to Barbourville, Ky. Rain caused the series against the Union College Bulldogs to be postponed from its original date, but the teams got on the field on Sunday for a doubleheader.

Game 1:

The game did not start the best for Tennessee Wesleyan as Union held a 7-0 lead through three innings. The Bulldogs gained a couple of runs back in the fourth which began with Dan Fry's triple. An error on Braden Mosley's hit scored Fry and a two-run homer by Shamoy Christopher made the score 7-3 when Mosley scored with Christopher. The home Bulldogs added two runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a six-run advantage.

The fifth inning saw TWU pull within one run of the lead. Max Draijer started the inning with a triple and the bases became loaded on walks by Tyler Reichenborn and Jhosmel Rodriquez. A second triple by Dan Fry cleared the bases, leaving Fry on third. Mosley scored Fry again, this time via a home run. The bottom half of the fifth saw Union score three runs to extend their lead to 12-8.

The teams traded runs in the seventh and eighth inning, with the Bulldogs of Tennessee Wesleyan's run coming on an Aloysius Cruz RBI-single which scored Fry in the seventh. With the score 13-9 in favor of the home team, a Chase Fullington single scoring Mosley and a fielder's choice off Draijer's hit which scored Manny Perez was not enough to bring the Bulldogs back, going on to fall 13-11.

Fry and Mosley both finished with three runs and three RBIs for TWU. Irving Martin got the start on the mound while Jesse Philp and Kolton Vermillion came in in relief.

Game 2:

Whereas the first game was high scoring, the second game was a defensive battle. The blue and white Bulldogs made the first strike though.

In the first inning, Malik Stephens' walk was followed by a Rodriquez single, and the bases became loaded on a Fry bunt-single. Alex Flock's single scored Stephens to give the team a 1-0 lead. Rodriquez made it a two-run advantage with his score off Mosley's single, but a double-play ended the rest of the scoring opportunities for Tennessee Wesleyan.

Two home runs would be the only scores after the first inning. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, the homers went to the side of the home team to give them a 3-2 lead to begin the seventh inning. The bottom of the seventh saw TWU get the tying run on base in the form of Stephens, getting into scoring position on second base via a stolen base. Two straight outs though ended the game and gave Union the 3-2 win.

The 1-7 hitters (Stephens, Rodriquez, Fry, Cruz, Flock, Mosley, and Fullington) all had one hit for the Bulldogs. Jack Granath started the game for the team while Gavin Roberson pitched in relief.

The losses move Tennessee Wesleyan's record to 18-4 overall and 2-2 in the AAC.

(RV) MEN'S LACROSSE UPSETS #9 ST. AMBROSE FOR FIRST WIN

Athens, Tenn.- The schedule did not get any easier for the Bulldogs on Sunday. After playing two straight ranked opponents on the road, (RV) Tennessee Wesleyan played their third ranked opponent in a row, this time at home when the #9 St. Ambrose University Fighting Bees came to town.

The game got off to a good start for the Bulldogs when Jaylan Steen took a pass from Stanton Grisham and sent it flying to the net for a goal, giving TWU a 1-0 lead. The team was held out of the net for the rest of the first quarter though, going into the next quarter trailing 2-1.

St. Ambrose scored the first goal in the second quarter but the Bulldogs saw the next two goals go their way. Roderick Williams took a pass from Ian Gonzalez and found it a spot in the net while Gavin Greco fed Steen a ball for his second goal, tying the game 3-3. Even though the Fighting Bees broke the tie, the Bulldogs would go into halftime leading. Williams slipped a ball past the keeper and Greco found the net to give Tennessee Wesleyan a 5-4 lead at halftime.

After giving up the first goal of the second half, the Bulldogs put their foot on the gas and did not look back. Grisham gave the lead back to TWU with his goal and a Steen-to-Jacob Patterson connection two different times gave the Bulldogs a three-goal advantage.

Including the three at the end of the third quarter, Tennessee Wesleyan scored eight straight goals to put the game out of reach. The fourth quarter's first goal came off the stick of Grisham to make the score 9-5. Steen's third goal of the contest pushed the Bulldogs into double-digits, soon taking an 11-5 lead when Williams found Grisham for a goal. Gonzalez found Williams again for the 12th goal of the contest, and a goal by Grisham off a Williams assist and Dylan Weaver's first career goal along with superb play from Kalen Fearing in the net helped TWU to the 14-6 win, the first of the season.

The four goals from Grisham were a career-high. Williams and Steen each had three goals while Patterson had two to go with Weaver's one. Fearing had 16 saves in the net for the Bulldogs

Tennessee Wesleyan (1-4) looks to move their winning streak to two in their Appalachian Athletic Conference opener against Point University on Saturday. The conference foes face off at 5:00 PM in West Point, Ga.
