Bristol, get ready for 'Movies in the Park' with an impressive 2019 line-up
Bristol, Tennessee - One of the real joys of summer is being outside enjoying the sunshine. What is even better is watching a great movie in a local park after dark under the stars. Anderson Park is one of the most beautiful parks in the city with the dense tree canopy, lush green grass, and a constant cool breeze. The Bristol, Tennessee Parks and Recreation Department is excited to announce a unique opportunity for families to enjoy the magic of the silver screen in a couple of the parks this summer. Friday Night Movies in the Park will present a new family-friendly feature film each month from June through August.
The series kicks off with Spider-Man –Into Spider Verse on Friday, June 14. Then, on Friday, July 12, families will be able to enjoy the adventures of Captain Marvel. Finally, on Friday, August 9, the Anderson Park series concludes with none other than Ant-Man & the Wasp. The grand finale for the Friday night movies will be hosted at Steele Creek Park’s Splash Pad and the feature playing that evening will be Aquaman. "Bring the kids and enjoy a final family outing before heading back to school," said Angie Rutherford. "It is a great way to spend time together without spending a lot of money. There is absolutely no charge for viewing the movies however the movie being shown at Steele Creek will require a $2 per car entry fee. Bring a blanket or chairs, pack a picnic, or purchase snacks on site."
While the films may be the main attraction, there is plenty more fun to be had. Each movie night, pre-show activities such as face painting, bubble tables, sidewalk chalk, bean bag toss, and more will begin at 7:00PM. The movie screening will start once the sun goes down at about 9:00PM.
Anderson Park is located at 341 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. and Steele Creek Park’s Splash Pad is located at 4 Little Lane in Bristol, Tennessee. Friday Night Movie Nights in the Park will only be held as permitted by the weather. Mayor Briley Celebrates Immigrant Heritage Month At Farmers’ Market
Nashville, Tennessee - Mayor Briley joined community leaders and immigration advocates in kicking off Immigrant Heritage Month (IHM) with a celebration and art installation at the Nashville Farmers’ Market today.
“Nashville is a vibrant and diverse city, and in many ways that is due to our thriving immigrant communities,” said Mayor Briley. “We have intentionally built a welcoming, supportive environment for New Americans here, and I am committed as mayor to keeping it that way. The celebration today honors the many contributions immigrants have made and will continue make to our city.”
“Different religions, languages and skin colors bring awareness to the fact that how you live is not the only way; that’s the benefit of celebrating immigrants,” said Bijal Mehta of the Mayor’s New Americans Advisory Council. “Nashville is a stronger city because of its immigrants, and we should always seek to lift them up in our community.”
The anchor of this year’s IHM celebrations is a public art installation. The #CelebrateImmigrants art demonstration proudly displays ‘I ♥ Nashville’ and invites participants to share their immigrant heritage or that of a loved one by placing a flag of their identified heritage(s) on the heart itself.
The event is part of the I Stand With Immigrants Initiative, powered by fwd.us, and is one of dozens being held across the country. This year marks the sixth-annual Immigrant Heritage Month and is an opportunity to celebrate immigrants, immigration and their heritage.

Make Music is a free celebration of music around the world on June 21st. Launched in 1982 in France as the Fête de la Musique, it is now held on the same day in more than 1,000 cities in 120 countries. Completely different from a typical music festival, Make Music is open to anyone who wants to take part. Every kind of musician — young and old, amateur and professional, of every musical persuasion — pours onto streets, parks, plazas, and porches to share their music with friends, neighbors, and strangers. All of it is free and open to the public.
Shelby Bottoms will host Ngawang Losel, who will perform Folk Tibetan songs and some melody songs written in English as well, which incorporates a vocal interactive music session, plus singing bowls and Gongs to add a taste of ancient sounds. He will also offer free private sound sessions off the stage.

Author Gail Kittleson Commemorates 75th Anniversary of D-Day with New World War 2 Novel, All for the Cause

Released to help commemorate the 75th Anniversary of D-Day, June 6, 1944, Kittleson’s newest addition to her “Women of the Heartland” brand of World War 2 novels focuses on the War in the Pacific, and deals specifically with events surrounding the fall of the Philippines and how those events impact the lives of the strong, courageous women who hold down the homefront in the Heartland.
The news was grim in May 1942. The Philippines had fallen to the Imperial Japanese Army. Rommel was on the move in Northern Africa. The Russian Army was pushed back toward Stalingrad. In the sweltering jungles of Corregidor, PFC Stan Ford battles illness and injury as he and his comrades escape and evade a tenacious enemy. And in the Heartland, women mourn the loss of husbands, sons, and sweethearts.
While everyone else seemed to be doing something to support the troops, Twila Brunner felt lost, and useless. But when she saw a newspaper article about a Prisoner of War camp being built in neighboring Algona, Iowa, she believed she finally discovered a way to give something for the Cause.
“Sometimes, goodness seems distant,” Gail muses. “But despite of this seeming distance, my characters experience the undeniable presence of divine goodness in the midst of horrible wartime atrocities. I’d like readers to experience this vicariously with them, and carry the concept over into their everyday lives. Pain and trouble come to us all, but embracing God’s love for us during these times provides meaning even in our great sorrows.”

Mayor Briley Announces Nashville’s Selection For Competitive City Accelerator Initiative
Mayor David Briley yesterday announced that Nashville has been selected to be part of the latest expansion of the Citi Foundation and Living Cities’ City Accelerator Initiative on Inclusive Procurement.
Nashville will receive $50,000 in grant funding in addition to a combination of coaching, technical assistance and implementation resources in the coming year. The other cities in the finalist cohort include: Boston, Cleveland, El Paso, Houston, Kansas City, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and South Bend.

Through a competitive application process, 25 youth were selected over the spring break to participate in the free summer camp. Campers are the older siblings of the agency’s pre-school programs (Head Start and Early Head Start). This population is representative of the agency’s Two-Generational/Whole Family approach to impacting the social and economic mobility of families in poverty. This is the fourth summer of the agency’s 8 week youth tech camp and at no cost to the family.
