CHATTANOOGA ZOO ANNOUNCES THE OPENING OF ITS NATURE PLAY

Chattanooga, Tennessee- The Chattanooga Zoo is proud to announce the grand opening of its interactive, naturalistic Nature Play playground. The Nature Play will include a honeycomb jungle gym, giant insects to climb, multiple musical components, a gazebo hut, a dig pit, a crawl through tunnel, boulders, and more.

The Zoo’s new Nature Play will encourage outdoor physical activity, provide a fun, educational environment for play, and will fulfill the zoo’s missions by creating ways to connect children with nature and wildlife. Play is critical to a child's learning and development, and nature play - or unstructured play outside - is even more important. When children are allowed to explore, create, and learn in nature they are found to have increased activity levels, decreased obesity rates, improved problem solving and reasoning skills, and increased social and emotional skills. Furthermore, children are found to have increased empathy for both other people and the animals and plants we share this planet with. In order to foster better stewards of the environment, it is essential that we allow our children to get out and explore nature. With natural substrates and theming, we hope to show our guests and their children that nature is accessible for everyone - all you need to do is get outside and explore!

Oakwood Park officially reopens tomorrow

Remodeled park features playground unique to middle Tennessee and spectacular view of downtown Nashville

Nashville, Tennessee - Mayor David Briley and Councilwoman Nancy VanReece officially reopen Oakwood Park at 1:30 p.m., tomorrow, April 13. The park reopens with a totally different look, new amenities, a unique playground, and a spectacular view of downtown Nashville from Mount Oakwood, the park’s peak.

Recent improvements to Oakwood, a 25-acre park located at 2701 Bethwood Drive, includes a new playground, rehabilitation of existing basketball courts, water fountain, benches, trash cans, picnic tables, signage, landscaping, and drainage improvements. Vehicular access was completely removed from the interior of the park, enhancing the pedestrian aspects. A primitive trail was blazed on the eastern slope to the top of the hill where it ties to an existing trail that wraps back down on the west creating a one mile loop.

The new, innovative playground is unique to Metro Parks and Oakwood. The equipment was engineered in Belgium by a company that is internationally known for their work and knowledge in the area of play – specifically focusing on how effective play design can motivate children, families, and communities to play, interact, and learn.

Mayor Briley Announces Early Office Closures During NFL Draft

Nashville, Tennessee - To help ensure traffic flow during the NFL Draft downtown, Metro is closing its offices and departments at 3 p.m. on April 25 and 26 for all non-essential personnel.

Metro is also encouraging its departments and agencies to consider alternative work locations for those non-essential employees on April 25 and 26, if possible.

“The NFL Draft is predicted to bring an additional 100,000 people to the downtown core each day,” said Mayor Briley. “To help mitigate traffic concerns, Metro will close early on these two days for non-essential personnel. I encourage downtown businesses to consider similar plans. I also would like to thank all of the essential employees across multiple departments who will be working to support the event.”

Mayor Briley is also encouraging downtown companies that have work-from-home capabilities to do so on April 25 and 26. If working from home is not possible, companies should consider staggered and flexible work hours. Road closure details can be found here.

The NFL Draft Committee and the Nashville Convention & Visitors Corp have continued to work in close coordination with Metro and the State of Tennessee to ensure the best logistical approach for building and executing the event.

The Rock 'n' Roll Nashville Marathon is also taking place downtown over the weekend. The Marathon expo is April 25 and 26, and racer packet pickup will happen Friday evening.

Mayor Briley Announces New Service to Alert Nashville During Emergencies

Mayor David Briley today announced new technology that will allow Metro’s public safety agencies to directly communicate to the people of Nashville in times of emergency: the Metro Emergency Alert & Notification System (MEANS).

MEANS will be Metro’s official “call to action” mechanism – delivering safety instructions via cellphone, landline, text/SMS, or text telephone (TTY) – for localized emergencies such as flooding, public health emergencies or active shooter situations. Watch an introduction video of MEANS.

“It’s my duty as Mayor to ensure that everyone in our city feels safe,” said Mayor Briley. “MEANS will complement and enhance the existing methods of communication for our public safety agencies and will help people in Nashville when there is an emergency. I encourage everyone to sign up for it.”

“This is an important way for us to keep the community updated on incidents happening in Davidson County,” said Nashville Fire Department Chief William Swann. “This service is controlled by Metro Government and communicates directly to the public, without a middleman. Residents and visitors can feel confident that when they receive alerts, they are getting accurate information straight from a Metro public safety agency.”

Residents may sign up for this free alerting service by visiting the MEANS Portal at http://MEANS.nashville.gov. Once registered, users can choose how they want to receive communications: cellphone, landline, text/SMS, or TTY. Users can enter one or more addresses to receive location-based emergency notifications. For example, if a user adds their home and work address to their account, they will receive emergency notifications when either of these two addresses is within the boundaries of an alert’s location. If a user wishes to only receive countywide text/SMS messages, they can simply text the keyword ‘NashAlerts’ to 888-777.

Users with smartphones are also urged to download the Everbridge Mobile App from the Apple App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android). The Everbridge app brings the added security of delivering alerts to cell phones based on a user’s physical location at the time of an emergency.

“The Everbridge app provides Metro with a key alerting capability because it enables us to send safety instructions to residents who happen to be in the vicinity of an emergency in real time,” said Department of Emergency Communication’s Director Michele Donegan.

MEANS is operated by Metro public safety departments and administered by the Metro Information Technology Services Department. Neither Metro Government nor Everbridge will ever sell or use confidential MEANS registration information for any other purpose than alerts to the public.

Partners in MEANS include the Department of Emergency Communications, the Emergency Communications District Board (ECD), Nashville Fire Department, the Office of Emergency Management and Metro Nashville Police Department.

Mayor Briley Proclaims Wednesday, April 10 as Preds Pride Day

Mayor David Briley has proclaimed Wednesday, April 10 Preds Pride Day in celebration of the opening game of the Nashville Predators’ playoff series against the Dallas Stars.

“It’s become the enviable norm here – another year, another playoff run for our Predators,” said Mayor Briley. “My proclamation is to once again let opposing teams know that we take our hockey seriously here. If there’s one thing the rest of the league knows about us, it’s that Nashville has one of the most vocal and rabid fan bases in the NHL. The atmosphere at Bridgestone Arena is second to none, and I’m ready for another fantastic run to the Stanley Cup.”

Mayor Briley is encouraging all Nashvillians to celebrate the Predators on their journey to the Stanley Cup by wearing Nashville Predators clothing or colors on Wednesday. In addition, the Mayor has ordered that the Courthouse and other city landmarks be lit gold.

The Preds Pride Day announcement is made in recognition of the Predators’ fifth consecutive year of reaching the Playoffs. Mayor Briley will make a similar request of all Nashvillians before Game 1 of every round of the Playoffs on the way to the Stanley Cup.“

The passion that Smashville has for this team is the envy of every team in sports,” said Nashville Predators President and CEO Sean Henry. “We are honored by the Mayor’s proclamation for Preds Pride Day. The success of the Predators franchise would not be possible without the support of Mayor Briley, our fans and the entire community. We look forward to celebrating in GOLD on Wednesday.”

Bristol TN Police Warn Of Scam

On March 25, 2019, a Bristol Tennessee resident filed a report that she was contacted by a male telling her that she had won $1,000,000 and a new Mercedes. The suspect requested the victim send a total of $27,000 to a second victim in Blountville, Tennessee. The second victim then forwarded $25,000 to a third victim in North Chicago, Illinois. The initial victim from Bristol Tennessee called the Bristol Tennessee Department to file a report, feeling she may have been a victim of a scam. The case was quickly assigned to the Criminal Investigations Division and detectives quickly recognized this was a scam and immediately began tracking the money transfers and were able to intercept the $24,000 sent to the person in Illinois. The victim from Bristol was contacted by the unknown suspect again and asked to apply for a $68,000 loan to send to him. The victim was advised not to send and more money and detectives were able to recoup the $24,000 and return it to the victim here in Bristol. Detectives are still attempting to recover the remaining $3,000 but believe it has been sent out of the country and probably unrecoverable. If not for the quick follow-up by the detectives the full amount would have been lost. The suspect is believed to be calling from Kingston, Jamaica. This information has been turned over to the U.S. Secret Service for further investigation.

The person in Blountville and North Chicago were both victims in the scam as well. The Bristol Tennessee Police Department wants to remind residents never to send money like this without consulting with a family member or law enforcement. Scammers will pose as companies giving out prize money, as Government officials trying to collect taxes or threaten arrest if fines aren’t paid. If you are contacted by someone requesting money like this, don’t send anything and call your local law enforcement agency immediately.

THE CHATTANOOGA ZOO IS CERTIFIED SENSORY INCLUSIVE

Chattanooga, Tennessee - The Chattanooga Zoo is proud to announce that it is now certified sensory inclusive by KultureCity. KultureCity has partnered with the Chattanooga Zoo to make the zoo and all zoo programs, events, and offerings to be sensory inclusive. This new initiative will promote an accommodating and positive experience for all zoo guests with sensory issues that visit the Chattanooga Zoo.  

The certification process entailed the staff at the Chattanooga Zoo being trained by leading medical professionals on how to recognize those guests with sensory needs and how to handle a sensory overload situation. Sensory bags, equipped with noisecanceling headphones, fidget tools, verbal cue cards, and weighted lap pads are now available to all guests at the zoo who may feel overwhelmed by the environment. The zoo has also provided a dedicated sensory room designed by medical professionals for those who may need a quieter and more secure environment.
