Recently, our founder/editor David Mills had the opportunity to interview these two up and coming sing duo from southern California. Here is what they have to say about their music, being normal young ladies pursuing a singing career, education and more.
When did you two start singing?
We started singing together about 5 years ago, when we were 8 and 12 years old.
Was it your dream to be singers?
As kids, we've always had an interest in the arts. When we were younger, however, Angela wanted to be an animal trainer, and Hannah wanted to be a cop. It wasn't until we started taking vocal and music lessons that we soon realized how much we enjoyed singing, and that it was a passion we wanted to pursue in life.
Tell us about your style of singing?
Our genre varies between indie, pop, and rock.
Are there challenges pursuing a singing career and being normal young ladies?
Yes, it can be challenging sometimes when it comes to balancing our schoolwork and music.
Do your parents and friends support you two?
100 percent! Our parents have helped us so much, and have supported us since the very beginning. Our friends are also very supportive, and it's great seeing them when they come out to our shows once in a while. (:
Do you two write your own songs?
Yes, we both write our own music. We actually have an original song out on iTunes right now called, "This Time." We've also been working on some new material, which we can't wait to share later this year!
If so, tell us what goes into writing a great song?
Emotion. A great song is one that tells a story. One that moves the listener, and is relatable.
Where was your first performance, were you two excited?
Our first performance was 5 years ago, at our local swap meet. We would set up and sing in front of our parents' food concession stand, while they took lunch orders. That was the first time we performed in front of a crowd, so we were a little nervous, but very excited.
How do you two prepare your voices for a performance?
We start out by doing a few breathing exercises, and then a series of different vocal warm ups. Humming, scales, do re mi's, etc.. Then we go out on stage!
If I went to one of your concerts, what can fans and I expect?
To have fun! We want people to get up, dance, and leave feeling energetic. We want to share, and inspire others with our music.
Where have you two been able to perform?
This past year, we had a lot of fun performing at the House of Blues San Diego, and at the Avalon Hollywood for a charity concert held by De51&Friends, an organization that focuses on protecting the world's children.
Who inspires you two with your singing and songwriting?
A big inspiration of ours is Taylor Swift. Her songs, "Fifteen" and "Fearless," were the very first two songs we covered. She is also our main inspiration for our songwriting. Other influences of ours include; Demi Lovato, Jason Mraz, and Ingrid Michaelson.
If you two could perform anywhere in the world, where would it be and with who/ why?
If we could perform anywhere, it would have to be in New York Time Square on New Year's Eve. We grew up watching the performances on TV, and always thought that it would be so much fun to perform there. If we could sing with anyone there, it'd have to be Taylor Swift. She's so fun and energetic on stage.
What do you two hope to accomplish with your singing/songwriting?
We want people to be able to relate to our music, and feel inspired.
What three words best describe you two and your music?
Sisters, harmony, & acoustic.
Any advice for those wanting to start a career in singing and songwriting?
Try auditioning for your school talent show, or do an open mic. Get out there, perform as much as you can, and have fun! For songwriting, write about you, your life, & your feelings. Don't be afraid to write it all down, even if it sounds a little cheesy at first. You might come up with something better as you continue to write!
Any other talents?
Angela has been playing the guitar for 7 years now, and has also picked up the ukulele. Hannah plays the ukulele, and has just started picking up the guitar. Hannah is also in theater, and enjoys singing and performing in her school's musicals.
Passionate about any charities, if so, why?
The American Heart Association - some of our relatives have had open heart surgery before.
Is education important?
Yes, education is very important to us. Hannah will be going into high school as a freshman later this fall, and Angela will be going into her senior year of high school. We both plan on attending college after.
We thank Angela & Hannah for taking the time to answer our questions. It is our hope to see them become really successful with their singing and songwriting.
